SCRIPPS-Lab Run -- ESP-WaldoApril 27, 2015 Roman delivers ESP Waldo to Andy Allen's lab at JCVI. Idea was to collect archived sample twice/week for ~6 months to test longevity issues with filters. mid-June, instrument started losing comms to elevator dwarf. Roman sent down to replace dwarf on June 29-30. Re-canned and restarted mission. RECOVERY Roman recovers ESP-Waldo October 6, 2015. ECOHAB -- Monterey BayTwo instruments, one north, one south. May 11, 2015 Deployed ESP-Mack w/ CTD in southern location. Running HAB/DA only. Transit north but weather turned very windy and could not deploy ESP-Bruce. Divers: Kim R., Paul C. May 12, 2015 Left Santa Cruz and Deployed ESP-Bruce w/ CTD in northern location. Running HAB/DA. Divers: Paul C., Jeff Sevadjian RECOVERY June 8, 2015 Kevan and Roman (along with Pascal Craw) recovered North (Bruce), then South (Mack) then back to Moss Landing (2:00pm) for unload. 1st MAKAI flight w 5 cartridgesJuly 22, 2015 Flew triangle pattern after launch. Makai found chlorophyll feature, and we fired two cartridges while flying through. First cartridge may have had sticky valve and stayed in by-pass (filtered 1L in ~20 minutes; too fast). Second cartridge seemed to have worked. Some issues with ESP not communicating it was on, and then LRAUV not turning it on. Went to recover vehicle late July 23, but did not surface until mission timed-out, after we were already ashore. That was when we discovered the comms issues. Fixed one, tried to fire during a 'night operation' Thursday evening. Discovered Friday morning a second comms issues, which was fixed, and fired the 3 samples during day on Friday, July 24. Did keep-station all weekend, and recovered LRAUV early Monday morning (July 27). Results: 1. Cartridge #1 bypassed 1L (toroid valve stuck; sea water ran through instrument in bypass mode; 7 minutes); flying through feature (chl=3.0 ug/l; 10.97m) 2. #2 filtered 815.8ml; flying through feature (11.03m; chl=3.3 ug/l; took 53 minutes) 3. #3 filtered 802.3ml; within feature (13.8m; chl=3.02 ug/l; took 51 minutes) 4. #4 filtered 759.6ml, above feature (7.1m; chl=1.11 ug/l; took 50 minutes) 5. #5 filtered 809.1ml, below feature (19.4m; chl=4.24 ug/l; took 51 minutes) Excellent summary paper by Yanwu Zhang about what the LRAUV did during this deployment--here.(check your download folder) SCRIPPS-Del Mar Mooring -- ESP-WaldoNovember 12, 2015 Roman and Scott drive down Nov 8 and work for the week to assemble mooring. Goes in water on the 12th (check ESP-Waldo channel on Slack for pictures). Setup has SCRIPPS modem as master mooring controller. when it sends command string to ESP, ESP and ESP-modem awake, which allows us to get into ESP for diagnosis and large data transfers. At end of sampling, ESP and it's modem goes to sleep. Currently (Dec 1) using this sampling schedule. Dec 6, 2015 I2C error has stopped our sampling mission. ESP now providing only CTD updates. Brent's message: "The problem that surfaced first last Wednesday has recurred and is not going away this time. Waldo's ESP host can access the sleepy microcontroller to get can status, etc., however, sleepy cannot access anything on the I2C bus." Dec 14, 2015 I2C bus was back online! Instrument had been left 'on' since last communications, and had some rough weather over this weekend. Brent was able to get in and unstick the hand then take a 'flawless' sample. Will see how she works in four days... Recovered Feb 4, 2016. MAKAI flight w 4 Archives, 1 Lyse-n-goDec 18-21, 2015 Launch/recover from MLML rib boat. Multiple failures with LRAUV; difficulty holding (shallow) depth, thruster errors. Original idea was to find a chl feature, take 2 archives. Dive below feature, take two archives. Reacquire feature, fire off l-n-g. With multiple vehicle errors and time running out (Holiday break; people leaving) we got one shallow archive, one deep, and ran the l-n-g deep. No feature ever found--very stormy and little stratification. Brett, Brian, Chris P on deployment; Brett, Ben, Jim on recovery. |
